New Publication in Patient Education and Counseling

Our latest article, "Preoperative Visualisation Tools for Surgical Effects in Shared Decision-Making: A Scoping Review," is now available online.

This work represents a valuable collaboration between Interdisciplinary Orthopaedics and the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology, bringing together expertise in patient-centred care and health technology.

Our review examined the current landscape of preoperative visualisation tools designed to support shared decision-making by helping patients better understand potential surgical outcomes by visualisation.

🔍 Key findings:
🔹 Few tools currently exist to visualise postoperative outcomes before surgery.
🔹 Most available technologies are concentrated in breast-related surgical specialties.
🔹 Visualisation tools can enhance patient understanding and strengthen surgeon–patient communication.
🔹 The accuracy of simulations has rarely been evaluated beyond breast surgery.
🔹 Significant opportunities remain to develop and validate these tools across a broader range of surgical specialties.

As healthcare continues to move toward more personalised and patient-centred approaches, visualisation technologies may play an increasingly important role in supporting informed decisions, improving communication, and enhancing the patient experience.
