Publication & collaboration with Akershus University Hospital (Norway)

Our PhD student Maria Tirta, during her research stay at Akershus universitetssykehus in Oslo, had the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues across the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery under the supervision of Per-Henrik Randsborg and Rune Jakobsen, contributing to a project that has now resulted in a new publication in Acta Orthopaedica!

The study included 288 children treated with flexible intramedullary nails (ESIN) for diaphyseal forearm fractures and investigated an important clinical question: Is routine implant removal really necessary?

The study found no clear difference in refracture risk between children who underwent implant removal and those who retained their implants. At the same time, implant retention was well tolerated and associated with fewer outpatient visits and radiographic examinations, supporting a more selective approach to implant removal in asymptomatic children.

Beyond the clinical findings, we are especially pleased that this project contributes to strengthening the collaboration between Akershus universitetssykehus 🇳🇴 and Interdisciplinary Orthopaedics at Aalborg Universitetshospital 🇩🇰.
